Keeping up with scientifc advances in the literature

Post a Problem
The volume of scientific information is huge. There is lot of really interesting work to take in. I am speaking not just for the professional wanting to keep up with his field but also the student of science wishing to broaden his knowledge.
My concern is not getting the information in printed form but getting information in printed form from the page to the brain. I am especially interested in ways to get the "meat" out of journals, books. the internet, emails, and all printed material. There is so much of interest that is not accessible on the printed word because there is not enough time to absorb the information. Any ideas?
