Internal Displacement in Colombia

Post a Problem
Internal displacement in Colombia is so severe that U.S. Representative James McGovern has expressed concerns that Colombia's internally displaced persons may well eventually develop into a "permanent underclass." The country's lengthy conflict has forced many individuals from their homes, and the drug trade, as well as drug eradication methods, have further destabilized the region. Those displaced are at disadvantage in terms of finding jobs and housing, and they live, often, in fear for their lives. Rural areas are some of the hardest hit, especially given that extensive fumigation of coca fields has forced many to move, and in general, women, youth, and indigenous persons have found themselves especially vulnerable.
