Untested rape kits |
Rape victims are often subjected to comprehensive physical examinations, which yield forensic and DNA evidence that can help police to identify rapists themselves. The problem, however, is that these "rape kits" - repositories of critical evidence - often go unexamined. In fact, tens of thousands of kits in the United States, reports Human Rights Watch, have been sitting in storage for years.
In fact, Human Rights Watch conducted a study revealing that when New York tested its entire stockpile of rape kits in the 1990s, the percentage of reported rape cases leading to arrest jumped dramatically: from 30% to 70%.
